If you are reading this article and you are an html code monkey this article is not written for you. All code monkeys need to go to Znet.com, Cnet.com or Software.com. You will probably get more out of those sites.

But if you are looking for some basic information about html web editors you are in the right place. You are in the right place because I'm going to take you from the beginning. If you start at the beginning and develop a good base you can build on that successfully without going back!

I assume you know what html really is. However, let's get to the basics. Html stands for Hyper text Markup Language. This language or code was developed to be very different from standard text. If you have seen html it looks crazy.

Way back in the beginning, 1994, the World Wide Web Consortium, (W3C) was established to develop a standard language all computers could understand.

Just think if they didn't develop html. You would never be reading this. They were some smart forward thinking guys. I think they were from MIT.

OK....we know html is a language, I call it a code. It is a secret code as far as I'm concerned. Next came html editors. Then came html web editors. Html editors can be as simple as notepad, or any text editor. That's right, you have several html web editors right on your computer. and probably didn't know it.

You probably didn't know it because unless you're one of those code monkeys I mentioned above, you can't use it. Any text editor is an html web editor if you know the code or language. As the world wide web grew, more and more people wanted to get there information out there but didn't want to learn html code or language.

I don't blame them. Html is a pain in the you know what. So some more smart guys and gals started to write new code to make the standard html code easier. Makes sense doesn't it? They started to add new functionality with little scripts to do some of the long hand coding automatically. Then they did some more.

What you got were graphic integration, tables, complete page editing, etc.. Video came much later. And so it went and html wed editors developed to where they are now. And here is where they are.

There are free open source web editors you can down load and use or add to. There are packaged html web editors that have some good functionality already in the software with a small cost. There are full blown editors that webmasters and designers use on your large content sights, large cost.

There is also about a dozen good" What You See Is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) editors that have really made it easy to build professional websites. These types of html editors allow you to not know any html code at all. The really good ones now are a complete website management software. The cost for these editors is a little less than two hundred dollars up to five or six hundred dollars.

This type of editor edits your complete content to make it search engine friendly. Search engine optimization is now more important than ever and this is a great feature. If you are thinking about building your own websites or would like to do it for others this type of html editors are your ticket.

As you know there is a learning curve to all new software. I have found out not all software programmers are alike. Some programmers sometimes write software that is not intuitive at all. It is really hard for the average person to use the software. Other programmers get it right and have easy to use software. The learning curve is very short.

As you search for the software that is right for you keep this in mind. Software that is hard to use will not get used. Find More HTML Web Editor Topics

Question by faithcopeland: what is a good open source web editor? im having trouble my front page and dreamweaver ar not working right i want an open source program for web design . as i dont have much money at all? Best answer for what is a good open source web editor?:

Answer by Chris H
Depends on what you define as good. My expirience so far is that you have to test quite a few editors before you find one you really like. So far I tested only three: KompoZer for WYSIWYG editing -> http://kompozer.net/ Quanta -> http://quanta.sourceforge.net/ Bluefish for source only -> http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/ I prefer Bluefish, because I don't like WYSIWYG and it can syntax highlight some more programming languages (perl. php, etc) that I need for server side programming. But there's more: The feature list of Mozilla's Seamonkey looks quite good, although it's more like the old Netscape Communicator and not only a simple editor. You can find it here: http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ W3C has developed this weird browser/editor crossover thingy called Amaya -> http://www.w3.org/Amaya/ These aren't open source, but free: Namo web editor 2006 - tested it quite some time ago (when it was called Namo 2000) http://www.namo.com/products/webeditor.php PageBreeze (only free for non commercial use) http://www.pagebreeze.com/ If you're really desperate you could try this -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Visual_Studio_Express#Visual_Web_Developer_Express

FrontPage is the world's WORSE web editor and is really outdated. Word, WordPad, Publisher and even the infamous FrontPage, including many Microsoft web editors should NEVER be used for web pages. They guarantee that your web pages will NOT be cross-browser compatible because of all the Microsoft Schema code it adds. Only IE and Maxthon understand this code. Additionally, FrontPage requires server extensions be installed to work correctly.
