Do you feel the concepts of graphic design and web design point towards the same objective?

At first they may seem to be having similarities whereas in reality there are more differences than similarities.  For many of the designers understanding the difference between graphic design and web design is like a roller coaster ride because most of them believe that the graphic design and web design are one and the same.

There are always risks involved when one switches from graphic design to web design because now the designing is no more confined to just paper and inches rather it is now in terms of pixels and screen sizes.

Here are some points of difference which separates the intervening concepts of graphic design and website design from one another:

1) Interactivity:  Have you ever expected any response after clicking on business card or brochure or poster? The answer will be no.

Interactivity is the main point of difference that separates web design and graphic design.

The visitors can expect to get their answers at the click of mouse. They have more discretion to leave or enter the web page as per their choice.  A well-developed website can add a lot to your marketing efforts.

2) Accessibility: The best piece of graphic design may not be accessible worldwide. Whereas a well-developed website is accessible to everyone around the world, so accessibility is another main point of difference which separates the graphic design from web design.

3)  Easy updating: The design which is created by a graphic designer as art becomes immortal in time and there is no chance of updating it. But websites cannot be static with changing times. Owning a static and out of date website is like owning wall without roof.  So it becomes relatively easy to update a website than updating a graphic design on paper

4)  Search engines visibility: A good design becomes relevant in only time and space, whereas the good website is accessible by everyone by the power of internet due to search engines. The website can owe its global marketing appeal to the power of internet and search engine.

5) Medium of expression: Web designer's medium of expression is basically limited to website whereas the graphic designer has choice to experiment with all offline medium of expressions like posters, banners, billboards, business cards, or any other medium of offline marketing.

Graphic designers, when they decide to go online may only focus on the look and feel of the website, whereas the web designer controls the designing and working aspects of a website.

A web designer can be a good graphic designer too, but a good graphic designer need not be a good web designer.

Question by agassi8: Web design job description.? I know that web designers also know stuff like photoshop, illustrator, and programs like that. I like more of the design side of things though I don't mind all of the coding. I was wondering what the career would be for example how much will I be looking at HTML code vs. working with these other programs. I was also wondering how much professionals use Dreamweaver. If you could give me a good description on what you can expect to do on the job and what kind of interests you need to have to enjoy the job. I took media classes, graphic design, and web design classes in high school. I liked learning HTML but it was a relief to switch to dreamweaver (something more visual). Thanks for all the help. Best answer for Web design job description.?:

It really depends on the job you're applying for, so take a look at different companies and job offers.

You'll probably want to stick with designing. If all you know is HTML, then you're deep in the weeds as far as coding goes. Large teams of developers "Probably" are more likely to use dreamweaver, but freelancers and other professionals are much more likely to use something more sophisticated like Eclipse.

If you like designing more than coding then perhaps you would enjoy graphic design rather than web design. In college I majored in Graphic Design and now I use Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign at my job which is at a graphic design & web development company. All my co-workers are Web Developers so they do all the coding while I design the look of a website (the layout). I design all the websites in Photoshop; I never use Dreamweaver nor do the Developers. After I create the Photoshop file, it gets handed off to someone else to slice and code. If you go for a career in web design you will need to know more than just HTML or CSS. There are many scripting languages out there and since technology is always changing, you'll need to stay up to date on many of them. There is a much higher demand in the job market for Web Designers & Developers than there are for Graphic Designers so you might take that into consideration. Print design just isn't as popular as it used to be with the advent of the internet.
